The Provincial Superior of Peru, Raúl Pariamachi sent the following communiqué concerning Fr. Gastón Garatea sscc to all Provincial Superiors:
The Congregation of the Sacred Hearts in Peru announces that in a letter of April 25, 2012, Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani communicated to the Provincial Superior of the Congregation his decision NOT to renew the priestly faculties of Fr. Jorge Gastón Garatea Yori ss.cc. This means that from now on Fr. Gastón Garatea cannot celebrate holy Mass or hear confessions of the faithful in the Archdiocese of Lima. The decision of the Cardinal is due to his belief that Fr. Garatea has distorted and questioned the teaching and authority of the Church in his statements in the media of social communication.
We deeply regret this decision of the Cardinal; at the same time we want it known that Father Garatea is complying with the decision with religious obedience.
The Congregation is sending some considerations to the Cardinal, with the respect due to the authority of the Pastor of the particular Church of Lima.
We express our sincere thanks to the people and institutions, in Peru and beyond, who have expressed their solidarity with our dear brother Gastón.
It is our sincere hope that this measure will be reversed in the coming months.
