On 19 September, Alberto Toutin sscc began his fraternal visit to the province of the USA. He arrived in Harlingen where the brothers and some lay people were waiting for him and then went on to Edinburg, both of which are in the diocese of Brownsville (Texas). The congregation has been in this diocese since 1977.
On 20 September, Alberto and Bob Charlton met with the bishop of the diocese, Bishop Daniel Flores. During the meeting, they discussed the new faces of immigration, especially those from Haiti and Mexico, who are fleeing the violence in their countries.
The drug cartels are heavily into the "business" of migration. They also discussed some of the significant elements that have emerged from the synodal process in the diocese: the desire for greater participation and consultation of the laity with the parish priests at all levels of diocesan life, and the discernment and acceptance of the diverse expressions of popular piety of the immigrant populations and the current spiritual searches that are happening right now.
