“Soul of Molokai”: a song tribute to Saint Damien

A new musical tribute has been released on YouTube under the title “Soul of Molokai”, a moving song that celebrates the life, mission, and legacy of Belgian saint Damien of Molokai, canonized in 2009. The piece blends artistic sensitivity with deep spirituality, giving voice to the generous dedication of the "apostle to the lepers."

Performed by singer Saraj, with photographic direction by Daniël JM Steeno, the song alternates touching imagery with poetic lyrics that narrate the key moments of Saint Damien’s ministry on the Hawaiian island of Molokai, where he chose to live and die alongside people affected by leprosy.

The lyrics highlight:

“In the heart of Molokai, your legacy stands tall,
a testament of love, you answered the call.”

With lines like “You helped them to belong” or “You showed us what it means to love deeply”, the song conveys Damien’s profoundly human and Christian spirit, whose total self-giving continues to inspire believers and non-believers alike.

The song is more than a tribute—it is a sung prayer, a modern echo of the Gospel lived with radical love by this priest of the Sacred Hearts (SSCC), who made the suffering of others his own home and mission.

The video is available on YouTube, accompanied by evocative images of Hawaii’s natural beauty—the setting where Damien turned despair into fraternity.
