Yesterday afternoon, the 40th General Chapter re-elected Alberto Toutin sscc as Superior General of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts.
A brief biographical sketch
Alberto Manuel Toutin Cataldo sscc, was born in Valparaíso (Chile), on March 11th, 1968, the son of Agustín Toutin and Josefina Cataldo. He entered the Chilean Province of the Congregation in 1986, completing his novitiate in Cerrillos de Curacaví in 1988. He made his religious profession on February 4th, 1989 and was ordained a priest in Concepción on August 27th, 1994. His pastoral activity was mainly with young people in youth ministry centres, universities and in the schools of the congregation. He was a formator in the postulancy of the Chilean province for 5 years.
He has a Bachelor's degree in Theology from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. Between 1997 and 2005 he studied at the Institut Catholique de Paris where he obtained a doctorate in Systematic Theology. He was a professor of Sacramental Theology and Theology and Literature at the Faculty of Theology of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. He was provincial vicar of Chile, from where he was elected general councilor at the 38th General Chapter in 2012.
On September 17th, 2018, he was elected, for his first term, Superior General of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts. On September 16th, 2024, he was re-elected Superior General during the 40th General Chapter held in Rome, with the motto: “Enlarge the space for your tent.” He is the 12th Superior General and the 11th successor of the Founder, José Mª Coudrin, the Good Father.
Alberto speaks several languages and in Rome he usually uses a bicycle to get around. He stands out for his intellectual capacity, his human qualities in his personal relationships, his attitude of service and his sensitivity towards the weakest. He is a member of the executive council of the Union of Superior Generals. He is an author too of several works on the spiritual animation of his religious family, such as “Reparation: Sources and Clues for Renewal” and “Apostolic Discernment SSCC: Availability for God’s Action.”
