Feast of St. Damien celebrated with creativity and missionary spirit in Yogyakarta

In preparation for the universal Church’s celebration of the Feast of Saint Damien of Molokai on May 10, the SSCC Scholasticate Community in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, organized a series of creative and spiritual activities.

The highlight was “Damien Idol,” a reflective and expressive initiative launched on May 6. This program provided a space to rediscover Saint Damien as a prophetic figure of evangelization today. Inspired by Damien’s inculturated missionary spirit, it encouraged participants to explore his legacy through performance, prayer, and personal reflection.

More than just a talent show, Damien Idol was a formative journey. Scholastics were invited to embody Damien’s bold compassion in today’s context, and to recognize that same missionary passion in Fr. Rolf, a beloved and humble priest whose life has deeply influenced the SSCC community in Indonesia.

The celebration concluded on May 15 with a thanksgiving Mass on the Feast of Saint Pachomius, patron of the Congregation. During the liturgy, the community also celebrated the 25th anniversary of the priestly ordination of Fr. Patrisius Breket Mudaj sscc. The day ended in joy with a shared meal, music, and games—expressions of fraternity and gratitude.

Through this celebration, the SSCC community reaffirms its mission to form future priests and religious who embody both intellectual depth and transformative love. Inspired by the witness of Saint Damien and Fr. Rolf, they walk as missionary disciples, “involved and supportive,” as Evangelii Gaudium reminds us—always ready to go beyond comfort to where love is most needed.
