A walk to remember:” Pangkalpinang island experience”

Our SSCC missionaries arrived in Pangkalpinang even before the war. They came from first-world countries, leaving behind comfort, family, security, and familiarity. Sometimes we only see the fruits of their mission today, but we do not always see the sacrifices hidden behind their smiles.

Learning a new language was not easy. Eating unfamiliar food was a daily challenge. Living on distant islands, far from their homeland, demanded courage and patience. Yet what touches my heart most is this: they endured everything silently because their hearts were burning with zeal for God and His people.

As an SSCC religious, they may not have spoken the local language perfectly, but they spoke the language of the heart. The people of the island felt their compassion, kindness, and presence. That became the true SSCC family spirit — a spirit of closeness, care, and love for the believers.

Our fathers did not simply build churches made of wood or concrete. They built communities with their hearts. They became fathers, brothers, listeners, and companions to the people. In their simplicity and perseverance, they showed the face of Christ.

For me as a young priest, this is also a deep challenge. Am I truly available to the needs of the congregation? Am I willing to leave my comfort zone? In this modern age, we can easily become tired, distracted, or focused on ourselves. Mission today may not always demand crossing oceans, but it still demands a generous heart, patience, compassion, and availability.

The example of our older missionaries reminds us that the mission is not about talent alone. It is about love that stays. Love that sacrifices. Love that remains even when no one notices.

Sometimes we may feel weak, discouraged, or inadequate. But the lives of our missionary fathers encourage us: God does not ask us to be perfect; He asks us to be faithful.

May we honor their legacy not only with words, celebrations, or memories, but by living the same SSCC spirit with perseverance, compassion, and generous service for the People of God. And may the next generation also see in us the same missionary heart they once saw in our older priests.
