On the 20th of May 2017, our brother Beltrán Villegas sscc, born in Santiago-Chile, has reached 98 years. For some time now he does not seem to be of this world as slowly he turns out the light. He was rightly admired as a teacher of Scripture. To many –both at the Scholasticate of the Chilean province until 1965 and later in the Faculty of Theology of the Catholic University of Chile– he introduced us to the world of the Bible and impressed us with his approach to understanding it.
From 1982 to 1988 he was General Councilor and, in this office, played an important role in the preparation and then in the drafting of the current Constitutions of the Congregation.
For some years he celebrated the Eucharist in the parish of the Immaculate Conception of Vitacura in Santiago. He was highly esteemed for his short and well put together homilies. Such was his presentation that people came from other cities to hear him and there were groups that recorded the homilies for later study and sharing with others.
